HUIA SOS

The fate of the HUIA SEAWALL and therefore the
HUIA DOMAIN is at a turning point

Auckland Council and the Local Board have detailed an option of 'managed retreat' or 'managed realignment' for the Huia Domain,  which is 'removal of existing seawall and relocation of high value infrastructure to restore a natural coastal edge and related coastal processes'

HOWEVER..... 90% of submitters favoured a properly engineered, extended seawall.

THIS website is for those people that want to keep the HUIA BAY SEAWALL, the HUIA DOMAIN, the PLAYGROUND, skate bowl, basketball court, bbq, the TREES and the TOILET/CHANGING SHEDS where they are for the local community and visitors to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park.

In May 2015 the Huia Domain Protection Group was set up.
This group is actively working with the Local Board/Council and Huia locals for a
postive outcome for the Huia Domain
their Facebook page is Huia Domain Protection Group

The last consultation with the Local Board and HDPG on the 8th Sept 2015 was summarised by Peter Dix

The Council proposed a new 'hybrid' version of options 1 & 2 as a means to keep the domain the same. I hope we can get their picture up here shortly for you all to view.

On paper it looks OK but when we went down and marked

out the Domain loss it is still a large chunk of our flat green grass - particularly when you take into account a 3m bund and possibly a swale behind that also....  Stand by ....

THE ONLY OPTION IS TO RETAIN THE HUIA DOMAIN

From Auckland Council

"Auckland Council has been closely monitoring the erosion at Huia Domain, in particular the area in front of the toilet block. Unfortunately, due to the extent of erosion the pohutakawa tree pictured below has now been undermined and destabilised. Treescape have confirmed there is now a risk of the tree failing during a high wind event. It is a low public traffic area, however the nearby targets include the toilet building, septic tank and power lines, all of which could be damaged in the case of tree failure. As such the tree will now be cut as low as possible, leaving the stump and root base.

UPDATE as of the 14th April, the Council have decided through public pressure, to try and save the trees....

Rocks were delivered and have been placed on top of a geotech material

and backfilled.

PETITION TO COUNCIL

Re-build our sea wall to protect the Huia reserve and all native heritage trees there. "Auckland Council have decided rather than Fixing Huia's seawall which protects our local domain and native heritage trees which line it - they would rather cut them all down, remove the old wall, remove the play ground, basket ball court, relocate the toilets and reduce the size of the park to under 50% its original size - as well as not protect the near by road, farm land, 5 residents homes from flooding and cemetery which has around 20 locals laid to rest there. They have apposed to all ideas put forward by our community (even though a new wall would cost about half the price than to remove the wall and cut down all of our trees) and have speed the process up by removing the large boulders that were protecting native Pohutukawa trees lining the beach. We need to stop the council from taking away our wall and tell them to fix or replace it as per their original plans! Help us save our little slice of paradise known as HUIA (located in Auckland 0604)! Please please we need your help!
